Bochum's Portuguese players

Daniel Fernandes

Daniel Fernandes

Canadian-born goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes is one of a number of emerging Portuguese players to have forged his career largely outside the country. Porto signed the giant goalkeeper to their youth academy in 2000, but after failing to make the grade with the Portuguese giants, Fernandes spent time in Spain and Germany before making his way to PAOK Saloniki in Greece.

It was while with PAOK that Fernandes finally began to flourish, spending five years at the club and impressing enough to earn his first international cap in 2007. A move to VFL Bochum came in the summer of 2008, with the switch to the Bundesliga coming just before Fernandes 25th birthday, giving him the platform to progress and establish himself as one of the leading candidates for the Portugal no.1 shirt.
